Kearney hit-and-run leads to DUI arrest.

In the early hours of August 12 officers from the Kearney Police Department were dispatched to a hit-and-run crash in the 100 Block of W 27th Street.

When officers arrived on the scene they found the bumper of the suspect vehicle, a black 2012 Nissan Altima. Officers found the license plate still attached to the bumper and proceeded to a known address for the registered owner.

Upon arrival at the Sterling Apartments, the officers located the obviously-damaged vehicle in the parking lot.

In an arrest affidavit, police say that they found the registered owner, Heidi Caufield passed out in the driver's seat of the vehicle with one foot hanging out of the open driver's door. The affidavit alleges that Caufield had watery blood-shot eyes and smelled of alcoholic beverages. (Story continues below photo)

The officer stated in his affidavit that Caufield showed signs of impairment during the field sobriety tests and that she refused a preliminary breath test. She later consented to a blood draw at Good Samaritan Hospital and was subsequently arrested for 3rd Offense DUI and refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test and was also given a citation for leaving the scene of an accident. Caufield has been convicted of DUIs in 2013 and 2015 according to court documents.

Caufield has bonded out after paying $750 cash.
